War of the Worlds Activity

  War of the Worlds Articles and Script.

Your task today in class is to read along with the script and listen to the broadcast of The War of the Worlds.  We will also be reading the articles from the "towns" newspaper on the anniversary of the famous broadcast.
Your task is to respond to the broadcast in a letter to the editor about what you have heard on the radio.  In your letter to the editor you will explain your position on the issue regarding the broadcast.

WAIT TO RESPOND.  We will be reading an article about how people responded, so DON'T post anything until Friday.  You will need this background information to answer the questions.

Your letter will need to take the position of a person that.......

1. believed the broadcast and thought the earth was being invaded by the martians.
2. loved it as entertainment, and doesn't understand how people could have believed that this was real!

Your post - is due on Friday by 3:30 pm.  It must be in proper letter to the editor format.

Joyeux Noel Letter

You have completed watching the movie Joyeux Noel, which shows many different things.  Most of these men did not really know what they were fighting for, they just knew that they had to fight and kill.  This movie shows that despite all the atrocities and killing, there can still be civility between the opposing sides.

When we began watching the movie, you were asked to pick one of three sides: German, French, or British (Scottish).  Your assignment is to write a short 1 paragraph letter as if you were a soldier from that side that was witness to what happened that Christmas eve.  How did you react to what happened? How did it change your perspective on why you were there?  Be creative with what you say in the letter, just keep it accurate to the story.

This letter should only be 1-2 paragraphs in length, as well as should be in complete sentences.  This "letter" is due posted prior to 8am on Monday.

Vanderbilt Response

After you have watched the video as a class, respond to the following question.  Do you feel that there should be a disclaimer telling people of the "not so good ways" that some of the Robber Barons made their money?  To explain this a little further, according to the conspicuous consumption and the idea of Social Darwinism, they had wealth because they deserved it.  Take the position of the person you were assigned from the "Who Am I Activity".  How would they have responded to this video of a Biltmore Christmas?
(One paragraph response written from the perspective of your person.  Be sure to Identify who you are by signing it as your character...and then your first name!)

Triangle Shirtwaist response.

Assume the identity of a relative of one of the women/men that died in the Triangle Shirtwaist fire.  What basic rights do you think a worker in a factory or at any job require as part of their rights as human beings?  Write a response to this statement using a name of a REAL person that died in the fire.  

• Include at least two "rights" that you feel are non-negotiable.
• Must be completed before 9am on Monday.
• Spelling/Grammar count!
